Beetle bark beetle

In nature, there are a huge number of insect pests that devour wood. One of the most dangerous such representatives is the bark beetle. This insect can destroy not only fruit or coniferous trees, but also cause serious damage to wooden houses and outbuildings. Having discovered the bark beetle or its larvae in the garden or house, it is urgent to take a number of measures, which we will discuss in this article.

Varieties and description of bark beetles

A distinctive characteristic of the bark beetle family is that they inhabit, breed and feed exclusively on wood. Today, there are about 750 species of such beetles. Most of them prefer to live and feast on spruce, cedar, fir or pine, destroying entire forests. But do not relax if coniferous trees do not grow on your site, because there are many bark beetles that feed on deciduous plants.

Bark beetles have many enemies. Many types of insects can penetrate their passages and eat eggs, larvae and pupae. It also feeds on the bark beetle and its larvae, an anthillus, blackling, greenfin flies, as well as short-winged staphylinids. Those who eat bark beetles include many species of birds.

Not everyone saw what a bark beetle looks like, so knowing the enemy by sight is simply necessary. Below is the bark beetle in the photo.

The most common are the following species of bark beetles.

Beetle typograph

The length of the carpenter is 5-6 mm. Its distinctive feature is light brown hairs on a black shiny body. In nutrition, the insect prefers thick-coniferous trees. Fresh stumps and young trees can also attract the attention of a typography beetle.

Eggs are the main damage that a bark beetle can do to a tree. Over time, larvae will appear from them, which can turn a suburban wooden building into dust in just a year.

Furniture grinder

Grinder - a beetle bark beetle of a small size of brown or red-brown hue. It has an elongated body with a head that is convex and hidden in a kind of hood. Adult woodworms do not pose a danger to wooden products, but the larvae of the bark beetle can damage the wood, eating it and making channels in it. Such a lifestyle of the pest causes significant damage to human property. Larvae furniture grinder can spoil not only furniture, but also wooden window frames and even flooring.

Luboed

Luboed is one of the most common species of bark beetle, which often lives in taiga. Beetles are able to fly over short distances, which gives them the opportunity to populate new territories.

The oblong body of the carpenter is covered with hairs. Color can be black, brown or brown, depending on the habitat of the pest. The beetle mustache resembles a mace.

The female lays eggs in a chamber turned in a tree trunk. The larvae that appeared over time begin to spoil the wood, forming many tunnels in it.After several links, the larva constructs its own chamber, in which it will turn into a chrysalis.

Big black barbel

Black with a greenish tint, the insect is one of the large pests (up to 3.5 cm). From the name of the insect it is clear that it is the owner of a long mustache, exceeding the size of the body by more than 2 times. The tips of the elytra of the woodworm end with a clearly visible white fluff.

Eats black barbel bark beetle preferably oak, spruce, pine or fir wood. Having settled on a tree, he begins to eat young shoots, excessively thick branches too tough for his teeth. In addition, wood resin has a negative effect on the eggs and larvae of the beetle. Therefore, more often a barbel can be found on felled trunks.

Before laying eggs, the female makes a hole in the tree bark. After 1-2 eggs, larvae hatch from 1-2 eggs that can easily crawl out and begin to make their own passages.

Sapwood

A pest with an oblong body shape slanted at the back. Ilm breeds and oaks are what the bark beetle eats. The sapwood goes through 4 stages of development: a larva appears from an egg in 10-14 days. In this form, she lives for 2-3 weeks and turns into a chrysalis. The pupal stage in this process takes about 10-14 days, after which an adult appears. After a while, the female beetle lays eggs, and the process repeats again.

What is dangerous bug bark beetle

As mentioned above, the result of vigorous activity of beetles becomes damaged whole forests. After all, a tree is the main object that attracts the attention of a bark beetle. At the beginning of the mating season, males gnaw out a move in the wood, after which pheromones attracting females begin to exude. Fertilizing the first female, the male leaves her to continue the work begun by him, and he sets off in search of a new family. The female further paves moves for future larvae. In one season, several insects can create a whole squad of parasites.

However, more damage to the tree is not caused by adult beetles, but by their larvae, which are distinguished by a large appetite. They are the ones who make winding passages under the bark, turning it into dust. It is also worth knowing how long the bark beetle lives. And he can remain in a state of larva for several years. Therefore, it is important to detect the pest in time.

Signs of infection

Traces of the presence of the bark beetle and its larvae can be detected by the following signs:

  • The appearance in the tree of small holes and the so-called wood flour;
  • Slight crackle.

In the first option, the probability of saving the wooden house from the pest still exists, in the second, the fight against the bark beetle may already be in vain.

On a note!

If you find small holes or passages of bark beetles in the tree bark, you need to make sure that it is not damaged. To do this, pierce the bark with a sharp knife near the hole. The presence of emptiness is a sure sign of tree infection by a pest.

Reasons for the appearance

The causes of the pest can be varied:

  • Starting the construction of a house, prepared lumber is treated with a special compound that prevents the appearance and spread of beetles and their larvae. But not all builders do this qualitatively, as a result of which the pest can damage the structure;
  • The use of low-quality raw materials is another reason for the appearance of a bark beetle;
  • Insects can enter the garden because they are constantly in search of food, moving from one tree to another.

On a note!

In order to avoid the spread of the pest, the fight against uninvited guests should be started as early as possible. If the bark beetle settled in the garden, it is possible that he can soon switch to wooden buildings, as insects breed very quickly.

Methods of struggle

You can get rid of the pest by various methods. The selection of the method of control depends on the place where the bark beetle lives.

If the insect larvae infect a tree, then tree control measures are as follows:

  • Using a steel wire, examine the bark beetle’s moves to check how deep the woodworm has penetrated. After that, treat the green space with insecticidal preparations: Actara, Bitoxibacillin, Calyps or Boverin;

  • The treatment of wood with a special solution will help expel the pest. But first, you should remove as much as possible all infected branches and sections of the tree. To prepare the solution, you need paraffin (6 hours) and rosin (3 hours), which are mixed and heated until boiling. Then add vegetable oil (10 hours) and boil for 10 minutes. A little fungicide is added to the resulting mixture, and the infected stands are treated with it. Beetles that climbed out are collected and burned.

If a bark beetle is found in an apartment or a house, then for several years it can cause irreparable damage to the owner of the property. In this connection, it is necessary from him get rid of the house:

  • Perform a thorough inspection of all wooden surfaces for small holes. They can be found even on wallpaper or on the floor under the carpet. The presence of wood dust near the holes is a sure sign that a bark beetle has wound up in the house;
  • Carpenters can enter a house not only from an infected garden, but also with poorly crafted furniture or other wood materials. Therefore, the best option would be the treatment of wooden surfaces with such drugs as: Anti-cough, Wood doctor, Antizhuk or Empire20;

  • If the wood is slightly infected with bark beetle larvae, insecticides can be administered with a syringe;
  • For maximum effect, the use of insecticides is effective in combination with aerosols;
  • You can also influence bark beetles and their larvae with heat (temperature should be above 65 degrees) and cold (temperature below 30 degrees).
  • The use of fumigators, pheromone traps, insecticidal checkers and electromagnetic wave emitters will help get rid of bark beetles.
