What to do if a child has a swollen eye after a mosquito bite

Mosquito bites can cause swelling and swelling in any person, but this is especially unpleasant when the face, eyes or eyelids are affected. Younger children with more delicate skin are very susceptible to the toxins that “bloodsuckers” emit. If the child’s eyes are swollen from a mosquito bite, treatment should be started as soon as possible so that the infection does not get into the bitten place and on the mucous membrane.

The cause of the tumor after bites

When piercing the proboscis of the skin, the female mosquito along with saliva, it releases anticoagulants designed to reduce blood coagulation. These toxic substances can cause allergic reaction, especially in babies. The bite site is clearly visible as a red dot on delicate skin.

If a mosquito bites a child in the eye, the possible negative consequences are expressed in the following:

  • severe edemacaused by the action of a histamine substance - occurs due to the fact that the skin of the eyelids can stretch and swell quickly due to accumulation of fluid in the lower layer of the epidermis;
  • redness and an increase in the volume of tissues in the eyelids can be large and even completely close the eye, depriving the child of the opportunity to see;
  • the bite itches and itches, because of which children often try to scratch the affected area, which can cause infection;
  • lacrimation caused by irritation of the eye mucosa.

On a note!

The usual severe swelling of the affected area occurs after a person lies on his back. Waking up in the morning after a mosquito bite in the eye, the baby can frighten parents with their appearance and inability to see anything due to swelling. After 1-2 hours, edema usually decreases after the child is in an upright position.

If infection could not be avoided, then the following symptoms may appear:

  • pronounced redness in the bite and around both eyes;
  • pain
  • the appearance of pus in the affected eye.

On a note!

If the child is in an upright position, and the tumor does not subside after 1 hour, then this is a sign of infection in the eye.
