How to make a fly trap at home

Flies are always in finding food. Attracted by interesting smells, they fly into houses and apartments, porches and sheds. In addition to the fact that their presence in the room annoys residents, flies on their feet carry germs and dirt, which can cause food spoilage and poisoning of people. A fly trap can solve the problem with annoying insects.

What attracts flies

Before getting rid of flies, you need to understand what has become the source of their attention. They can attract odors:

  • sweet jam, honey, syrup;
  • ripe fruits and vegetables;
  • meat and fish;
  • food waste in the form of scraps and peels;
  • vanilla, cinnamon, sweet flavors and additives;
  • manure and sewage;
  • spoiled foods.

Having got rid of potential bait for flies, you can avoid their appearance in the house or significantly reduce their numbers. But in some situations, the invasion of flies may be associated with the presence of a source of their attention in the neighborhood and it is impossible to influence it. Then it remains to trust traps or special poisonous insect repellents.

On a note!

Insecticides are also based on natural substances and are safe for humans. In the line Raptor pyrethrum-based poisons are present.

Types of Fly Traps

Types of Fly Traps

Unlike pesticides and synthetic insecticides based on thiamethoxam (Agita, Aktara), safe traps can be used in close proximity with people, animals, without fear for their health. The main principle of such a trap is to attract the fly to the bait and prevent it from leaving the trap. There are three types of traps:

  1. Velcro - sheets of cardboard or tape coated with a sticky mixture with a pleasant sweet smell. Flies land on such baits and stick. Advantages of adhesive tape: easy to manufacture and cheap to buy at the store, convenient to use anywhere, easy to clean and dispose of along with adherent insects. The disadvantages include the unpleasant appearance of the hanging traps in the room, the risk of hitting the head with a sticky bait suspended from the ceiling.
  2. Traps-traps with bait are made from improvised means. Insects fly into a certain compartment with a bait, but cannot fly back. As a bait, you can use jam, honey, sweet water, pieces of fruit or meat. The advantages of this method of catching flies in the ease of manufacture of the product and its effectiveness. The disadvantages of homemade work include the unpleasant smell of spoiled products, which play the role of a bait for flies, and the likelihood of capsizing the tank by curious pets or a child.
  3. Electrofumigators. Devices requiring consumables in the form of an insecticide in a vial or from a special plate with a poisonous substance. Plus: work without misfires. Less: depending on the composition of the insecticide, ventilation of the room after use is sometimes required.
  4. Electric fly traps are special devices powered by electricity.They attract insects with ultraviolet light and heat, but when flies come in contact with a certain surface, they kill them with a current discharge. Such a blow is not capable of injuring a person, but for small flying insects it is fatal. Other electronic traps act differently - they suck in the near-flying insects. The advantages of an electric trap are a stylish appearance, an additional light source in the dark, high efficiency, safety for others. By cons include the high price of electric exterminators of flies, power consumption, bulky device sizes.
  5. Ultrasonic Repellers. When connected to the network, they make an inaudible sound to the human ear, which should make the flies stay away. Cons: does not always work; pets hearing ultrasound may be against.

Homemade traps

A person often uses his ingenuity to achieve certain goals. The insect control was no exception. Annoying flies can infuriate even the calmest person. For the extermination of insects, the especially entrepreneurial make home-made traps.

Plastic Bottle Trap

For the manufacture of homemade products you will need an ordinary plastic bottle with a volume of 1 or 1.5 liters, scissors or a knife, any sweet filling, adhesive tape.

  1. The upper part is cut from the bottle at a distance of 7-8 cm from the edge of the neck.
  2. At the bottom of the resulting container is the bait: jam, honey, syrup.
  3. A cut neck in the shape of a funnel is pushed into the tank with the neck down.
  4. The wide edge of the funnel and the upper edge of the container are fixed with tape or tape.

On a note!

The narrow edge of the neck should not touch the sweet filling. Flies should not get sweetness without flying inside the bottle.

Such a trap for flies from a plastic bottle can catch other insects, sweet tooth: wasps, bees, midges. A simple and affordable way to make a trap allows you to throw it out with a large accumulation of insects inside and make a new one.

Glass flycatcher

You can make a fly trap from an ordinary glass or plastic cup and food-grade transparent film. At the bottom of the glass, put a teaspoon of honey or jam. It is necessary to cover the cup with cling film and tightly tighten, fixing the edges of the film with adhesive tape. In the film, make 2-3 holes so that the insect can penetrate into the glass. Such homemade products can be made several and placed throughout the house.

Glass jar trap

In places where large flies congregate, you need a more serious bait - spoiled meat or fruit. They have a sharp strong odor and will attract a larger amount of flying midges.

  1. As a container, a liter jar of glass with a wide neck is taken.
  2. A few pieces of bait are put inside.
  3. A wide funnel is installed from above with a narrow neck down.
  4. The edges of the container and the wide edges of the funnel are fastened together with tape or wide mounting tape for reliable construction.

On a note!

The strong smell of rotten vegetables, fruits or meat will be very unpleasant for households and interesting for cats and dogs. Therefore, it is recommended to use such a flycatcher for catching flies on open verandas and place it in places inaccessible to animals.

Instead of a glass container, you can use containers made of dense plastic with a wide neck. The main condition for a reliable flycatcher is the absence of gaps between the funnel and the bank. Otherwise, flies can crawl out. These traps are well suited for use in cottagesif you place them around the perimeter of the site.

Duct tape

One of the most popular fly traps is sticky tape. It is sold in any hardware store and costs from 20 to 50 rubles apiece. But if there is no way to purchase goods in the store, you can make Velcro at home.To do this, mix 1 tablespoon of rosin with a tablespoon of castor or linseed oil. Heat the resulting mixture in a water bath and stir for 5 minutes. Then add jam and cool. Apply sticky mass to long strips of thick paper and hang in places where flies are often found.

Subject to the recipe, homemade glue remains sticky for a long time and is able to reliably hold insects attracted by the smell of jam.

Electric insect killers

For people who do not have time to make homemade products, but who want to quickly and effectively get rid of the flying sinus, there are electric traps for flies. These devices are made of a metal body with a refractory plastic coating, have several ultraviolet lamps, the bright light of which attracts insects. On the way to the lamps, the flies fall on the grid through which the current passes, and immediately die. The conductive element is protected by an extra coarse mesh to prevent accidental contact with a person or pet. Such devices also help get rid of mosquitoes, midges.

Pest killer

An electrical device for killing flying insects. Two ultraviolet lamps with a power of 20W act as bait. Near the lamps passes a metal mesh that conducts current. The electric trap is designed for flies and mosquitoes. For the correct functioning of the device it is necessary:

  • set the trap on a flat surface;
  • connect to AC power;
  • make sure that moisture does not get on the device;
  • clean the dead insect tray periodically.

The price of the device is about 3500 rubles. The device is durable and, if used correctly, will last for several years. Range of an electric trap up to 120 m2. Power consumption 15 watts. Overall dimensions: 51х31.5х10.5 cm; weight 2.3 kg.

Reviews

Every summer we suffer in the country from flies. Have bought sticky tapesclapperboard, but it's all ineffective. They solved the problem radically - purchased the electric destroyer Pest Killer. Flies and mosquitoes are gone completely!

Flies often appear in my private home. I can’t poison them with Dichlorvos, I have a small child. I read on the Internet about makeshift traps from a bottle. I did it myself and noticed the result. Flies have become much smaller. A good budget option for those with small children at home.
