Laboratory diagnosis of dog pyroplasmosis

Pyroplasmosis or babesiosis is a dangerous dog infectious disease transmitted by a bite ixodid ticks. To diagnose the disease by the first signs, it is necessary to conduct an analysis for pyroplasmosis.

Course of the disease

Babesiosis refers to a seasonal ailment, since tick activity - the main carrier of infection, accounts for May-August. The causative agent of pyroplasmosis is the microorganism Babesia canis, which through the arachnid's saliva enters the dog’s blood during a bite. Microorganisms lead a parasitic lifestyle, multiplying in red blood cells and gradually destroying the internal systems of the animal’s body.

On a note!

The incubation period can reach 20 days. If a tick was found on the dog’s body, it is desirable pull out and take to a special laboratory for research. The parasite must be placed in a plastic or glass container, stored in the refrigerator for no more than 2 days.

Ticks are checked for 1-2 days, in the same place in the clinic you can immediately donate the blood of a pet for the presence of antibodies. If the tick test for pyroplasmosis was positive, this does not yet confirm the presence of the virus in the dog.

Arachnid can bite a pet unnoticed by its owner and fall off. Then the first signs of malaise in the dog should cause suspicion:

  • lethargy and weakness;
  • high body temperature;
  • decreased appetite;
  • apathy;
  • decrease in pet activity;
  • dark brown urine;
  • at a late stage - jaundice.

Important!

If symptoms of the disease appear within a few days, you should contact your veterinarian and take a referral for a blood test. The lack of treatment leads to the development of the disease, damage to the internal organs and, ultimately, to death.

Other veterinary clinics are represented by one office.

Laboratory diagnosis of dog pyroplasmosis consists in collecting blood from the vessels of the ear or fingers. A smear for pyroplasmosis is not taken from large vessels, since in this blood it is more difficult to detect the presence of antibodies at an early stage of the disease.Microscopy pyroplasmosis can be determined by the presence of parasites in red blood cells.

A smear is recommended several times within 5-7 days, since the first tests can be negative. It is not always possible to detect antibodies at the first stage immediately, but it is impossible to deny infection with a dangerous disease in the presence of symptoms. If the test for piroplasmosis in a dog is negative, blood should be examined for other known viruses with similar symptoms.

Vaccination

In order to protect your four-legged friend from the unpleasant consequences of babesiosis, many veterinarians carry out vaccination. Vaccines Nobivak Piro, Pirodog, Bravecto contain antigens of the pyroplasm bacteria.

Important!

In immunocompromised dogs, vaccination can lead to babesiosis infection. Before vaccination, consult your veterinarian.

Vaccination does not guarantee 100% protection against the virus, but facilitates the course of the disease and reduces the risk of death. The cost of the service depends on the choice of the clinic and can vary from 2500 to 4000 thousand rubles.
